Weekly Devotion Feb 2nd

Feb. 2 is the Presentation of Our Lord.  The appointed Psalm is 84.

How lovely is your dwelling place, O LORD of hosts!  My soul longs, indeed it faints for the courts of the LORD; my heart and my flesh sing for joy to the living God. Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, at your altars, O LORD of hosts, my King and my God.  Happy are those who live in your house, ever singing your praise. (1-4)

But, it’s also Groundhog Day!  And, if you have read the news, you know what happened this morning in Punxsutawney, PA.  Phil saw his shadow.  Six more weeks of winter, and it has surely started off (late) with a bang!  So what are we going to do?  Well, what Psalm 84 says, I guess.  Look out the window.  Be amazed at the beauty outside.  Stay inside and be warm.  Don’t hurry likes it’s just another day. The times and the weather will change soon enough.

We know what the Presentation of Our Lord is all about.  When Joseph and Mary brought the baby Jesus to the temple for purification, according to Luke 2:22 ff., he was recognized by two prophets Simeon and Anna as the saving gift of God.  After praising God for the birth of this beautiful child, Simeon also foretold a darkness that was yet to come.  Perhaps none of us can be sure of what will follow in the days ahead, but if we receive each day that comes as a gift, snow or rain or springtime yet to come, we can still move forward in faith.  As it says in Luke 2:40: The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him.

Can any of us ask for more?

Happy Groundhog Day.  Enjoy the snow!
