God's abundance. Your hands. - Reflections 8-2-20

Texts for Sunday, August 2, 2020

9th Sunday after Pentecost

 Isaiah 55:1-5
 Psalm 145:8-9,14- 21
 Romans 9:1-5
 Matthew 14:13-21

The texts for this Sunday focus on the abundance that comes from God's hand.

Here is my devotion "Food, Glorious Food" from 3 years ago.

Because of the pandemic, most all that I listed as ways Gloria Dei provided food is on pause. The crew that does still serve Free Lunch once a month.

One issue that gets lost in all the news about the coronavirus is that in some cases the virus mitigation efforts have stopped food from getting to those who need it, both here in our country and even more so in developing countries. Disruption to food production and supplies due to COVID-19 could cause more deaths from starvation than the disease itself. We face a worldwide food emergency; we could double the number of people facing acute hunger to 265 million by the end of this year.

Locally, our CommUnity Food Bank for Johnson County is looking for volunteers who are not in the "vulnerable" group for COVID19. Most of their volunteers are in that group and rightfully are staying home right now. That puts them, and all of our food resource organizations short handed. If you feel you can get out into the community safely, you are seriously needed.

Note: They are also receiving food donations from the public again.

And if you are at home, any one of your favorite organizations  that work against hunger - including CommUnity and Table to Table - are still doing so: ELCA World Hunger, Lutheran World Relief, Oxfam,UNICEF. Any size donations go a surprisingly long way to helping people who are food insecure. Give generously!

These texts for this Sunday focus on God's abundance. And moving people's hearts and minds is one of God's way of providing.
